Wear Conditions

In CS:GO, the wear value (also called the 'float') refers to the level of wear and tear on a skin. There are five different wear conditions that a skin can have, ranging from Factory New to Battle-Scarred. The wear condition is determined by the skins 'float' value, a number from 0 to 1.

Here are the different wear values, along with a brief description of their appearance:

  • Factory New (FN) [0.0 - 0.07] - These skins have no visible wear and appear brand new. They have a clean, glossy finish and are generally the most valuable wear value.
  • Minimal Wear (MW) [0.07 - 0.15] - These skins have slight wear but still appear relatively new. They may have a few scratches or blemishes, but are still mostly clean and shiny.
  • Field-Tested (FT) [0.15 - 0.38] - These skins have more noticeable wear and may have some scratches, dents, or discoloration. However, they are still in decent condition.
  • Well-Worn (WW) [0.38 - 0.45] - These skins have significant wear and may have visible scratches, scuffs, and other signs of damage. They have a more worn and weathered appearance.
  • Battle-Scarred (BS) [0.45 - 1.0] - These skins have extreme wear and may have deep scratches, rust, and other signs of heavy damage. They have a very worn and damaged appearance and are generally the least valuable wear value.

It's important to note that the wear value of a skin does not affect its performance in any way and is purely cosmetic. However, some players may prefer skins with certain wear values, depending on their personal preferences and the perceived value of different wear values on the market.

Float Value

The float value is a number between 0 and 1 that represents the degree of wear and tear on a skin. It is sometimes also referred to as the "wear value" or "condition value."

The float value is used to determine the exact appearance of a skin, including its level of wear and any scratches or blemishes. Two skins with the same wear value and pattern can look different depending on their float values.

The float value is determined by the random chance when a skin is dropped or unboxed from a case, and it cannot be changed or modified. It is visible in-game when inspecting a weapon or looking at a skin in a player's inventory.

The float value is important for skin collectors and traders because it can affect the value of a skin. Skins with lower float values (closer to 0) are generally more valuable because they have less wear and tear and look more pristine. Skins with higher float values (closer to 1) are generally less valuable because they have more wear and tear and may have scratches, scuffs, or other blemishes.

Finding the best seeds for durability

Some skins like ones for the karambit have an edge that wears away pretty quickly. Because this wear texture is generating using the seed, we can pre-generate all seeds wear and compare them to find the seeds with the least amount of wear.

In order to find the best karambit seeds for edge durability. We use a similar system to how we find the best case-hardened patterns. First we render the skin zoomed in on the edge with a full white texture and no wear, then we count the amount of pixels visible. Next we render every seed 0-1000 at a wear value of 0.6 and we count the number of white pixels and compare it to the base with no wear applied. Then we can sort the values and find the one with the least amount of paint chipped away. You can see the best and worst seeds for the doppler skin below.

...
Worst Edge Wear - Karambit Doppler - Seed 339 (0.06 Wear)
...
Seed 339 Pixel Mask
...
Best Edge Wear - Karambit Doppler - Seed 153 (0.06 Wear)
...
Seed 153 Pixel Mask

The generated values will be valid for all karambit skins with the same skin type/properties. This means a Karambit Doppler seed 153 will have the same wear pattern as a Karambit Fade with seed 153. At the time of making this there seems to be 3 groups of skins which will always share the wear patterns across seeds.
